Commitment to more sustainability –

innovative, successful together

With the 2030 Agenda, the member states of the United Nations have set themselves 17 goals (Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs for short) for the socially, economically and ecologically sustainable development of the world. These sustainability goals are aimed at everyone - as well as each and every person personally.

MUNDITECH is convinced that the SDGs support them in actively contributing to more sustainability. They highlight opportunities and challenges for the future and thus drive important innovations.

MUNDITECH has made it its mission to integrate sustainability into all innovation processes - and is already making a valuable contribution to some important SDGs.

Food packaging equipped with Mundex hygienic coatings can extend the shelf life of perishable food.  In addition, the antimicrobial finish protects against contamination, e.g. when exporting food. This reduces food waste – and increases food security.

Mundex hygienic coatings close hygiene gaps between individual disinfection cycles and create permanent antimicrobial surfaces, or antimicrobially equipped products. By interrupting infection chains – without using toxic agents – MUNDEX makes an important contribution to greater health and safety in many areas of our society.

Independent laboratory tests have proven that Mundex hygiene coatings can disinfect water sustainably. By making water treatment technology accessible to less developed regions in the future, they will also benefit from easy access to germ-free water.

On behalf of the European Commission, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) recorded the production and import quantities of all reported biocidal active substances (usually environmentally harmful substances) in 2009. The result: a total of almost 400,000 tonnes of biocidal active substances were manufactured in or imported into the EU alone. The largest main groups of biocides by volume (about half of all biocidal active substances) are disinfectants and algaecides, which are harmful to the environment.

The biocide-free Mundex hygiene coatings or products equipped with Mundex make it possible to substitute environmentally harmful antimicrobial agents in a wide variety of industrial applications. By dispensing with environmentally harmful biocidal active substances, industry can make a major contribution to greater sustainability and environmental awareness along the value chain.

In addition to the substitution of biocides - usually environmentally harmful active substances in industry - the consumption of harmful disinfectants can also be significantly reduced through Mundex hygiene coatings or the products equipped with them. This is because Mundex solutions are largely based on naturally renewable raw materials and are completely biodegradable. In addition, Mundex technology is permanently effective. This reduces the use of biocides - and the costs.

Biocidal agents are intended to drive away or kill so-called harmful organisms. However, these –usually toxic – active substances also have an effect on so-called non-target organisms. Thus, there is a high probability that biocidal active substances have an unwanted effect in the environment and on humans.

Due to a wide variety of applications, biocidal products or their degradation products can enter the environment. Replacing biocidal products with sustainable Mundex hygiene coatings or products equipped with Mundex prevents the uptake of harmful biocides by the environment and living creatures.
